WCF TECHNICAL CONFERENCE SCHEDULE IS NOW AVAILABLE

The First Annual West Central Florida Section Technical Conference schedule has just been published.  Also a restaurant and lodging list and descriptions of the presentations have just been published as well.

THE WCF EXPERIMENTER HAS A NEW NAME AND EDITOR.  NOW AT HOME ON THE SECTION WEBSITE

 

THE EXPERIMENTER, the Official Technical Newsletter of the ARRL West Central Florida Section has a new name, editor, and home.  The newsletter name has been slightly changed to THE WCF EXPERIMENTER and Geoff Haines N1GY, Technical Coordinator, is once again the editor for THE WCF EXPERIMENTER.  Also THE WCF EXPERIMENTER is now at its new home on the section webpage.

THE EXPERIMENTER was started in 2000 by Darrell Davis KT4WX, the Technical Coordinator for the ARRL West Central Florida Section at its inception.  Geoff Haines N1GY became the newsletter editor in 2005 soon after succeeding Darrell as Technical Coordinator.  Darrell revived the newsletter in 2012 after being in hiatus for a few years and produced it until the end of 2014.  Geoff became the newsletter editor again in January 2015, with the election of Darrell to be the Section Manager.  With the publication of Issue 204, the newsletter name was changed to THE WCF EXPERIMENTER.

THE WCF EXPERIMENTER now is at its new home on the Section website.  You may visit its new home at http://arrlwcf.org/home/the-wcf-experimenter-technical-newsletter.  Past issues will be added in the near future.

THE WCF EXPERIMENTER #204, SPRING 2015, HAS BEEN PUBLISHED

Geoff Haines N1GY our Technical Coordinator for the ARRL West Central Florida Section is once again at the helm of THE WCF EXPERIMENTER, formerly called THE EXPERIMENTER.  Geoff assumed the editor’s desk from Darrell Davis KT4WX when he was elected to be Section Manager.

THE WCF EXPERIMENTER will be a quarterly newsletter and there is in the works a download section for this issue and all past issues going back to 2000.

THE FIRST ANNUAL WEST CENTRAL FLORIDA SECTION TECHNICAL CONFERENCE:

The time is drawing closer and we are only a little over a month away from The First Annual West Central Florida Section Technical Conference that will be held on Saturday April 4, 2015 from 9:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. at the Bert J. Harris Jr. Agri-Civic Center, 4905 George Blvd, Sebring. Welcome and last minute registration will begin at 8:15 A.M. If you are planning on attending, please go to the WCF Section Technical Conference Registration Page at http://arrlwcf.org/wcf-special-events/wcftechconference/ and fill out the online registration form. You will receive an online and email confirmation of your successful registration. There you can also download the conference flyer, and look WCF Section Technical Conference Event Page on the WCF Section Events Calendar, which has a Google Map showing the location of the Agri-Civic Center. We are still looking for more speakers. If you have an area of expertise in any area of amateur radio or amateur radio related technology consider being on of our speakers. Having a PowerPoint slide show and or PDF handouts is a great addition but not required if you wish to speak. We will have a section on our website for PDF handouts and or PowerPoint presentations that will go live when the conference begins, so those who attend the conference will be able to view and or download these materials on their tables and or smart-phones for viewing during the presentations.

The conference schedule will be finalized in mid to late March and the conference schedule will be published on the Section website mid to late March as well. We will have hourly door prizes and several door prizes at the end of the day. You must be present to win one of the door prizes. Also we will have a guest speaker for one of the conference slots from ARRL Headquarters. Anyone from inside or outside of the Section is welcome to attend or be a speaker af the conference.

WCF SECTION 15TH BIRTHDAY QSO PARTY:

The ARRL West Central Florida Section turned 15 years old on January 15, 2015. It seemed appropriate that we celebrate the 15^th birthday of the Section. The period of the WCF Section QSO Party has been revised and will begin on April 1, 2015 but will end on June 26, 2015, the day before ARRL Field Day. The full contest rules will be published on the Section website in the next week. Also we are planning to have K4WCF portable operations at least once in each of ten counties of the WCF Section. If your club or group is interested in running K4WCF for a day in your county, please fill out the Contact Form on the Section website at http://arrlwcf.org/contact-info/. All modes and frequencies, including repeaters will be allowed. This will allow many of our new hams who do not as of yet have HF privileges to get on and make contacts for the WCF Section QSO Party.

STATION APPOINTEE MONTHLY REPORTS – NOW FILE THEM ON LINE:

If you are serving in one of these appointments, please be sure to file a monthly report by the 5^th day of the month following the month being reported. For example for the month of January, your report would be due by February 5^th.

As promised, your Section staff have made this a lot simpler for you. You may now go to our Section website and fill out your monthly report there. Go to the section in the menu called Section Forms which is at http://arrlwcf.org/section-forms/ and select the appropriate form for your Station Appointment. Upon successful submission you will receive an on screen confirmation and almost immediately you will receive an email confirmation for your records that also goes to the Cabinet member that oversees your program. Your report is then filed and you are all done for the month. Regular reporting is an ARRL requirement to hold an ARRL Station Appointment.

STATION APPOINTEES PLEASE REAPPLY – LAST CALL:

To those of you who have re-applied for your various ARRL Station Appointments, thank you very much. If you have been serving as an ARRL Station Appointee (Emergency Coordinator, Official Relay Station, Net Manager, Official Emergency Station, Official Observer, Local Government Liaison, Technical Specialist) and have not reapplied, please go to our newly redesigned Section website and reapply on the Online Station Appointment Form at http://arrlwcf.org/section-forms/station-appointee-application-form/ to continue your appointment. This allows us to know who is interested in continuing to serve as an ARRL Station Appointee and who is no longer active. Please be sure to do so by the end of this month.

SECTION CALENDAR – CALL FOR YOUR CLUB MEETING, RADIO NETS, AND REPEATER INFORMATION:

To those who have already sent us their club meeting information, thank you for sending in that information. If you are contact for your radio club or group, please help us getting out your club meeting, radio net, and repeater information in the right places on our Section website by filling out a Contact Form at http://arrlwcf.org/contact-info/. You will receive an online and email confirmation of what you submitted. Then we can compile this information and put it on the Section website.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY:

February was another busy month for your Section Manager and staff as it is this time of the year. On Friday February 13^th a meeting was held between two representatives from the Florida Division of Emergency Management (Phil Royce KE4PWE, Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) Communications Branch Director and Bob Little KK4OAI, FDEM Planner) and the Section Managers and Section Emergency Coordinators of all three ARRL Florida Sections. The meeting took place at the Orlando Hamcation next to the forum rooms, humorously having to pause for a forklift working next to our meeting location. Ben Henley KI4IGX (ASM and SEC), Randy Payne K4EZM (ASM and ASEC), and I had a very productive and flowing conversation with our counterparts from the Northern Florida Section, Southern Florida Section, and Florida Division of Emergency Management representatives with future meetings planned. The following Section Cabinet members were in attendance at the Orlando Hamcation one, two, or all three days: Darrell Davis KT4WX (SM), Dee Turner N4GD (ASM), Randy Payne K4EZM (ASM), Ben Henley KI4IGX (ASM and SEC), Jeff Bronsing KJ4NEO (ACC), Doug Williams N2DW (STM), and Geoff Haines N1GY (TC). On Saturday February 21^st, Jeff Bronsing KJ4NEO (ACC), Geoff Haines N1GY (TC), Randy Payne K4EZM (ASM), Ben Henley KI4IGX (ASM and SEC), and I attended the Highlands County Hamfest just south of Sebring. This is a small hamfest was despite of the weather being still a little cool on the back end of an unusual cold spell for Florida. On Saturday February 28^th, Randy Payne K4EZM (ASM) and I have the privilege of participating in the first Highlands County Amateur Radio Club and Highlands County ARES 2 Meter Simplex Contest. I operated portable fixed making contacts with many on 2 Meter FM Simplex from Fort Meade, Bowling Green, Wauchula, Zolfo Springs, Avon Park, and Sebring. Randy operated W4HEM, the amateur radio station at the Highlands County EOC.An enjoyable lunch after the contest was held at Hibachl’s Buffet on the north side of Sebring.

LEMUEL “WOODY” FURMAN KJ4KSG APPOINTED TO BE AN ARRL NET MANAGER, AS ASSISTANT NET MANAGER FOR THE EAGLE NET

On Monday February 16, Lemuel “Woody” Furman KJ4KSG, was appointed to be an ARRL Net Manager as Assistant Net Manager for the Eagle Net, the NTS Traffic Net for the ARRL West Central Florida Section.  Woody’s responsibilities include helping Dave with collecting Net Control Station reports from the various Net Control Stations that run the Eagle Net as well as a Alternate Net Control when needed.

Woody, originally from the outer banks of North Carolina, is a retired plumber and a part time musician.  Woody, first licensed in 2008, enjoys amateur radio and is enthusiastic about the hobby, and is very active in the Manatee County Amateur Radio Club, the Bradenton Amateur Radio Club, and Manatee County ARES and has a dual role as an ARRL Public Information Officer in Manatee County.

FLORIDA SECTIONS AND FLORIDA DIVISION OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT HAVE FIRST MEETING AT ORLANDO HAMCATION

On Friday February 13, at the Orlando Hamcation and in the middle of the afternoon, the Section Managers and Section Emergency Coordinators of all three ARRL Florida Sections have their first “sit down” meeting with Phil Royce (who is also KE4PWE), the new Communications Branch Director and Bob Little (who is also KK4OAI) Communications Planner, both from the Florida Division of Emergency Management.

At the meeting, which was held next to the forum rooms at the Hamcation and often humorously interrupted with the sound of a tractor style forklift working nearby, the first agreements were made as to how the State of Florida Emergency Operations Center will interface simultaneously with all three Florida Sections and all 67 County Emergency Operations Center.  The meeting lasted for over an hour and future meetings and less formal gatherings are planned.

WEST CENTRAL FLORIDA SECTION QSO PARTY – INITIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

The ARRL West Central Florida Section is celebrating its 15th birthday by holding a West Central Florida Section QSO Party.  With the ARRL Centennial QSO Party being so well received last year, our Section Staff has decided to hold our own Section QSO Party this year to celebrate the Section’s 15th birthday.

The QSO Party will run from 0000 hours (12:00 A.M) April 1, 2015  through 2359 hours (11:59 P.M) June 26, 2015, the day before ARRL Field Day.  There will be several categories of entry as well as a tier of points that may be achieved.  The full list of contest rules will be published around the first days of March.  Also there are plans to have at least one K4WCF Portable operation in each of the ten counties of the West Central Florida Section.

If your club, group, or ARES or ACS organization is interested in putting on K4WCF Portable for the West Central Florida Section QSO Party in your county, please fill out the Contact and Information Form and send us the following information:  (1) Name of your club, group, or ARES/ACS organization, (2) Contact information for your operation, and (3) Desired date(s) of operation of K4WCF.  K4WCF Portable operations are not limited to just one per county, and it would be desirable to have at least two K4WCF operations per county to give folks opportunity to work the K4WCF operations in each county at least once.

Makes plans now to come and join the West Central Florida Section QSO Party.

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY – BEN HENLEY KI4IGX – ASSISTANT SECTION MANAGER AND SECTION EMERGENCY COORDINATOR

Ben is a native of Florida, born on the east coast of Florida but grew up in Highlands County and graduated from Sebring High School in 1987.  Ben has always enjoyed Public Service and started off right after high school doing duty as a volunteer fire fighter in Highlands County, while working for Florida Hospital in Information Technology.  Ben started working for Highlands County Emergency Management in 1998 and has been in his current position of Emergency Management Coordinator since 2000.  Ben also has been over Communications and the 911 department of Highlands County.  Ben also has been a two way radio bench technician for an E.F. Johnson dealer.

Ben was first licensed in 2005 as Technician and recently upgraded to General class.  Ben became an Assistant Section Emergency Coordinator in 2009, followed by becoming an Assistant Section Manager in late 2014, followed by becoming Section Emergency Coordinator in 2015.

SECTION MANAGER AND ASSISTANT SECTION MANAGER ATTEND THE MIAMI HAMBOREE ON 1/30/15 AND 1/31/15

On Friday January 30th and Saturday January 31st, Darrell Davis KT4WX, Section Manager, and Ben Henley KI4IGX, Assistant Section Manager, traveled to West Miami to attend the Miami Hamboree as representatives of the West Central Florida Section.

Darrell and Ben, spent a significant amount of time helping out Jeff Beals WA4AW, Section Manager of the Southern Florida Section, with the ARRL table and enjoyed attending the ARRL forum on Saturday and hearing about the various activities of the Southern Florida Section.  Darrell and Ben also were able to have dinner on Friday and Saturday evening with Jeff Beals WA4AW and some of his Section Staff.  The hamfest was enjoyed by all who attended.

SECTION OFFICIALS VISIT DESOTO COUNTY HAMFESTS AND TWO SPAR WINTER FIELD DAY SITES ON 1/24/15

On Saturday January 24th, Darrell Davis KT4WX (Section Manager), Ben Henley KI4IGX (Assistant Section Manager and Section Emergency Coordinator), and Randy Payne K4EZM (Assistant Section Manager and Assistant Section Emergency Coordinator) went on a day long caravan to visit one hamfest and two SPAR Winter Field Day sites.

 

First stop was from 0700 (7:00 A.M.) until 1200 (12:00 A.M.) at the Desoto Hamfest at the Turner Agri-Civic Center in Arcadia.  Turnout was smaller than desired due to a squall line along a cold front that came through in the early morning hours but fun and good fellowship was had by all that attended.  Had a number of visitors stop by the ARRL table.

 

SPAR (Society for the Preservation of Amateur Radio) sponsors an annual Winter Field Day each year and this year it was on the same day as the Desoto County Hamfest.  So after leaving the hamfest and stopping briefly for lunch, the caravan went over to the Sarasota Amateur Radio Association (SARA) SPAR Winter Field Day on the east side of Sarasota just off of I-75.  The folks at SARA made the caravan feel welcome and right at home.  Thanks to Les Keegan N4LPK, President of SARA, for the invitation to stop by and for being an excellent host.

After leaving Sarasota, the caravan made its final stop of the day with the folks from Manatee County ARES that had setup a SPAR Winter Field Day at Camp Flying Eagle.  Thanks to Ed Skalecki NI4MX, Emergency Coordinator for Manatee County ARES and his team for the invitation to stop by for also being an excellent host.
